Three Weeks Until SfN

I was just reminded there are three weeks until SfN, 22 days. Well, it’s late so 21.3 days to be exact. Which means there are 20 days until I fly to San Diego. Which means there are 19 days until I need to print my poster. But if I consider how long it takes to make a poster, have my PI edit it, change things, find all the typos when I think I’m done, etc, I really have about 16 days until I need to make my poster. 17 if I write quickly. So that’s just over 2 weeks until I need to have all the data that I am planning to put on my poster finished.

So really this is a two week warning. You have 2 weeks left to finish experiments to put the graphs on your poster. I’m not saying you need to panic yet, but we’re getting pretty close to panic time. I am down to my last chance for my experiments to work. If they do, no panic, we’re fine. If they don’t, I don’t know if I have enough time to run them again. In that case I get to play the fun game of trying to make a poster look good even though I don’t have the data I thought I would. I think that is the worst part of submitting abstracts 6 months ahead of the conference. You really are just making up what you think will happen. And then prepping for the conference feels like a slap in the face of the reality that 6 long months worth of work don’t look like nearly as much as you thought it would.

Or this could be the time I’ve ironed out all the kinks, the experiment works great, and my poster looks amazing. Who knows? I still have 22 days…no wait 2 weeks…let’s go people!

First of all wished I was going to San Diego my favorite place for SFN. For a decades my life turned around SFN deadlines. The abstract deadline , getting the hotel, preparing the presentation , and international departure. Living in Europe we had one less day to get our abstract MAILED in with the postoffice stamp of May 1. We had to get ours to the post office by April 30th because May 1st is a holiday in Europe. I have seen the evolution of typing the abstract, printing the abstract with paper that did not correspond to the size of American paper so we had to make many trials and errors to assure that the one abstract form we had fitted into the printer so that when we pressed print on the computer all of the words fitted into the blue lines. That drum roll drama. Then finally being able to use online services to submit abstracts what a relief. We were quite fortunate to have slide presentations since personally I don’t like posters at all. I agree that whenever I saw my data on a poster I had the feeling that it was really reduced to nothing. Enjoy your moment of adrenaline rush of getting ready for neuroscience . You will make it even when it seems impossible.
Neuroscience will remain forever as one of the most significant parts of my life. Do enjoy your stay in San Diego .

Have the grandest time in San Diego. If you eat sushi think of me. Some of the best sushi I have ever eaten was in San Diego. One of my favorite restaurants ( not for sushi) is the adorable Searsucker in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Take care
