What Advice Do You Have For Dissertation Writing?

I’ve done it! I have finally written the first few sentences of my dissertation! I started this blog a year ago thinking I would be done by now. But I have finally started writing. I have a few paragraphs out of order written. They probably will be edited ten times over, but for now, I have words on a page. Hooray!

With that being said, does anyone out there have advice on writing a dissertation? What kind of things did you wish you knew before you started? A preference for EndNote or Mendeley or another program? Great advice someone else gave you? I’m all ears.

I used Zotero for my reference managing and really found it useful and easy to use (plus it’s free!). The best advice that my peers gave me was to start early (like several months out from your intended defense) and write every day, even if it’s just a little bit. Making a habit of it definitely got me past the hesitation of sitting down and committing to writing.

Another piece of advice that I really took to heart is from Dan Harmon (writer for Community and Rick and Morty). To sum it up, he essentially says that people are bad at creating things, but great at criticizing. So when you’re writing, just write anything and everything then criticize it until it’s good!

I have also started writing a few bits and pieces. Does someone have any advice on best practices to follow that can make formatting easier later on (I have to write it in Words, unfortunately)?
