Pros and Cons of Being a Senior Grad Student
Pro: I don’t need to ask my advisor for help all the time.
Con: I can’t meet with my advisor because the new grad student is asking for help all the time.
Pro: I have perfected my organization system for my work space.
Con: The intern keep stealing my stuff.
Pro: I can get an intern to help me with my experiments.
Con: I can teach an intern all summer and they’ll finally be independent just in time for fall semester to start.
Pro: My dream of getting a post-doc is in sight
Con: I have to apply to post-doc positions.
Pro: I know where the cheap, fun places in the city are.
Con: I don’t have time for that…
Pro: I am an independent worker now.
Con: I keep getting interrupted by people asking me for help.
Pro: I can work whenever I want.
Con: I’m writing this at 10pm on a Saturday, and that’s not unusual.
Pro: I can spend less time in lab and more time writing.
Con: I am pretty sure this much sitting and staring at a screen is bad for my eyes, posture, and overall health.
Pro: I’ve gotten to celebrate some of my friends graduating.
Con: I AM SO JEALOUS!
Pro: Getting to watch the new graduates get lost and be happy I’m not like that any more.
Con: They all ask me why I haven’t graduated yet…just you wait…
Pro: I get to start taking control of the direction of my project.
Con: This was a terrible direction to take.
Pro: I finally convinced my parents I’m not going to be a medical doctor
Con: They still don’t understand what I do.
Pro: I’ve gotten close to some awesome, supportive, patient friends.
Con: I’m going to miss them when I graduate.
Pro: I’m almost done.
Con: I do love this job.
